Spencer, “We the People Deserve Better” Boston, By DJ Kerry Cannon

Spencer “We The People Deserve Better” Boston
By Kerry Cannon

Late January 2020, the news quickly spread around the world that a man had lit up a joint in a Tennessee courtroom, and declared- ” We The People deserve better.” Spencer Boston was in court that day, facing charges for the victimless crime of being in possession of 1/8 th of Cannabis flower. That’s about 3.5 grams. I recently had a conversation with Spencer about that day, the aftermath, the madness of Cannabis prohibition, and where he’s at now with his “criminal” case.
Spencer Boston showed up to court on January 27, 2020  with a joint tucked into his pocket, unsure if he would follow through with his stunt. Spencer decided he’d see how things went and go from there, but was fully prepared for the consequences of his actions. His intention wasn’t to disrespect Judge Haywood or the court. Spencer’s intention was to bring about greater awareness of the absurdity of Cannabis prohibition, how time and resources are wasted on victimless crimes, while real crimes, with actual victims, occur. “I had nothing to lose. I had recently lost my job. If I go to jail it will be a vacation. In my eyes, I had nothing to lose at all” , Spencer shared. about his pre spark thoughts. “I’m not getting slapped in the face and being told not to do it again, when it’s really not a big deal. When there’s people out here actually doing bad things.”

Spencer was immediately detained after lighting up the joint in the courtroom, and held for 10 days in jail in contempt of court. While incarcerated, Spencer was being told that he made High Times, his story was being reported on across the world, a gofundme was set up for him, and that many calls were being made to the court asking Judge Haywood to drop all charges against him.  Spencer said he thought the people telling him this were just boasting him up. He was shocked when he learned it all was indeed true.  No big news really comes from his sleepy town of Lebanon, Tennessee.
Outside of federally legal Hemp (CBD), there are no forms of Cannabis legalization in Tennessee. While all use of Cannabis  is medicinal, regardless of the intentions behind it’s use, Tennessee continues to make patients criminals. When asked if he receives any medicinal benefits from toking Cannabis, Spencer shared that he has ADHD. “I’m naturally stimulated. Cannabis slows me down, gives me a breather, helps me to not be overloaded, and takes tension and anxiety away” Spencer said.  There are currently stacked misdemeanors charges that Spencer is facing, which are 3 civil possession charges, disorderly conduct, and contempt of court. Arraignment for Spencer Boston is scheduled for November 25, 2020. He’s currently out on bond. Interesting fact- Spencer’s dad is a long time, well respected police officer who works at the very courthouse where Spencer lit up at. His dad wasn’t aware of his son’s actions, at his work, until later that day. While in the office, other police officers shared the news that someone had light up a joint in the courtroom earlier that day. He became aware it was his son who did this, after another officer showed him a picture of the guy who lit up. Spencer said his dad was very unhappy with him for a few days after this, because of how it might affect his reputation professionally. The father/son on the opposite sides of this issue, created conversation within the police force. Spencer’s dad shared with him, that all the police officers there are for legalizing weed, that they’d rather not spend time ruining people’s lives over weed, and would rather put their efforts toward actual crimes.  Interestingly, this stunt by a police officer’s son, actually created some good within the force, and didn’t hurt Spencer’s dad’s reputation at all. I asked Spencer if there was any action he’d like we the people to take in support of him. He said to standby, and that he appreciates all of the support he’s had.  It was great speaking to Spencer.  He’s  very down to earth, and courageous in following his heart. For him it’s natural, as he doesn’t concern himself with the opinions of those who don’t contribute positively to his life.  Thank you Spencer for taking one for the team!  It’s going to take many of us to really end this madness.  The conversation needs to be ongoing. Action must happen. We need to do what we can to stop injustices that may not directly affect us, yet indirectly they do.  In the not too distant future, my full interview with Spencer Boston will be broadcasted on WJAE420.com on The KC Kush show.  Tune in there to hear about Spenser’s story and more.
